Effingham County family loses four pets, home to fire

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, GA (WTOC) -

A fire that destroyed an Effingham County home Monday night is under investigation.

Firefighters received a call just before 8 p.m. to a structure fire in the 4300 block of Old Dixie Road in Springfield. There were two people living in the 2-story home that made it out safe.

Unfortunately, four of the family's pets perished in the fire. Effingham County deputies were able to save most of the cats and dogs from the burning home, but there were more than two-dozen animals inside, and the house collapsed. Rescue efforts went into the next day due to the number of animals said to be living both inside and outside of the residence.

Firefighters from four departments responded to the fire. They had to truck in water from a nearby pond due to the lack of hydrants in the area.

The home is a complete loss. Red Cross volunteers provided the family with funds for food, clothing and temporary shelter.

An investigation into the cause is underway.
