Chamblee officer fatally shoots armed robbery suspect, incident caught on camera

Posted: Updated:

A Chamblee police officer shot and killed a man suspected of tying up employees of an AutoZone store, in the 4600 block of Buford Highway, in an attempt to rob the place.

Officers responded to the armed robbery call just after midnight Tuesday. As officers were setting up a perimeter around the store, the suspect came outside, police said.

"They gave him verbal commands to get on the ground. He refused," said Capt. Ernesto Ford of the Chamblee Police Department. "A struggle ensued. During the struggle, one of our officers shot and fatally wounded the suspect."

Police said the suspect was carrying a gun. Investigators believe the man entered the auto parts store as it was closing. During the robbery, he tied up five employees inside the store using plastic zip ties, according to police. One of the employees escaped and called 911.

Surveillance video from a nearby business shows officers hiding behind cars and then escort the hostages out with their hands still tied behind their backs.

Authorities have not identified the suspect. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the officer-involved shooting. The officer and the employees were not injured.
