A hit-and-run accident injured a mother and her daughter in DeKalb County Monday afternoon.

Chamblee police said a black Ford Explorer lost control on Chamblee Dunwoody Road and hit a woman and her 9-year-old daughter while she was riding her bike on the sidewalk. The mother was holding a 2-year-old child in her arms.

The driver then sped off.

One of the first people on the scene was Monica Leon. Leon heard the accident from across the street.

Leon borrowed another woman's phone to dial 911 and stayed with the mother and child until paramedics arrived. "She was grabbing my leg and she was like, 'Please help my baby,' and I was like, 'Oh my god, I'm going to lose it'."

According to Leon, it was obvious the girl was seriously injured. "I don't know if her legs were broken but she couldn't move them, she was bleeding from her mouth, from her eye, I don't know how I kept it together," said Leon.

Through it all, Leon says the girl was relatively calm and it was her mother who was screaming. "I looked at her mom and I told her to just look at her daughter and realize that her daughter was awake and she was breathing," said Leon "I needed her to stay calm because she was scaring [the girl]."

Thankfully, a nurse stopped to help.

"We pulled up on the scene of a little girl laying on the ground and she had obviously been hit by a vehicle and she was moving a lot, and she was seriously injured. So I did my best to stabilize her until the paramedics got there," said Ashley Baker.

The girl suffered serious injuries to her foot and head, and was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

The mother sustained injuries to her legs and back and was taken to Northside Hospital. The 2-year-old child did not sustain any injuries.

Police located the SUV. Inside they found the vehicles registration and open bottles of beer.

There is no word if they made an arrest.
