DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

Nutritious meals and snacks are being made available to kids in Morgan County this summer, thanks to Decatur Youth Services and Decatur City Schools. Thomas Buchanan is the lead program co-coordinator.

"We actually collaborate with the school system," Buchanan said. "The Decatur City School System actually provides the meals and delivers the meals to each site."

That brings peace of mind for working parents, like Jeffery Ayers.

"I work midnight shift; I know my little one can go ahead and start his day off as if he is going to school," Ayers said. "Breakfast is there, lunch is there, and then dinner with me."

Knowing his child is safe and well fed, Ayers can concentrate on working.

"Being a single guardian, I find it is convenient with the program... I know they will get a healthy meal - a breakfast and lunch. With school being out, a lot of kids don't have the opportunity or know where their next meal is going to come from."

Buchanan said the Carrie Matthews Center is one of several places around the city where this nutritional program takes place. The idea, according to Buchanan, is to reach as many people as possible.

"You find that right here in Decatur, you will have people living below the poverty line and not able to provide food for their kids," he said.
