DULUTH, GA (CBS46) -

A man who was shot at a Gwinnett County hotel early Wednesday morning has died, according to Gwinnett County police.

Investigators are trying to figure out who shot the man at a motel near Duluth.

It happened at about 2 a.m. at the Quality Inn on Venture Parkway near Pleasant Hill Road.

According to Corporal Jake Smith, several people in their late teens and early twenties were attending a party inside a room at the motel. There was an argument, and as many as three people began firing shots in the parking lot.

Officers at the scene told CBS46 News that the 23-year-old man was shot in the chest. Friends took him by car to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery, police said.

The victim and shooter knew each other, Smith said.

At about 6 a.m., officers executed a search warrant and began processing the motel room where the party was held.

Officers on the scene told CBS46 News that witnesses were not being fully cooperative with investigators. No one was in custody; however, as police searched the room, officers detained the young man who rented it.
