GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

The sound of multiple gun shots in back of Bethesda United Methodist Church in Lawrenceville, marked the end of an armed robbery that started at Wells Fargo in the 3000 block of Lawrenceville Highway.

"I was in my bed just waking up when I heard it," said Amanda Dansereau, who lives nearby.

Police said it started when a man with a gun walked inside the bank and demanded money.
A customer called 911 and told officers the suspect ran across the street. Police said one of the responding officers found the suspect in back of the church.

"There was a physical confrontation between the officer and the suspect. The suspect apparently or subsequently hit the officer over the head, possibly with the gun that he was armed with, and the officer then used force to stop the suspect," said Corp. Ed Ritter, with the Gwinnett County Police Dept.

"It was a little scary, but I'm nosey Rosie so I am watching the whole thing," said Dansereau.

Dansereau lives right across the street from the church.

"I got up and looked outside my window and that's when I saw all the police cars driving down the street," Dansereau said.

The suspect died at the scene. The officer was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"A very interesting morning," said Dansereau.

Police said they are still trying to figure out if the suspect acted alone or with someone else.
