Local counties warn pre-paid card scams

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS46) -

A warning for residents in two metro Atlanta counties, and a reminder for us all.

Officials in Spalding and Henry counties say there have been reports of scams involving Green Dot Cards going around.

In Spalding County, the Clerk of Courts office says citizens are getting calls saying they failed to report for jury duty and they are in contempt of court. The scammer will then ask for prepaid Green Dot Cards in various amounts.

In Henry County, residents are receiving calls from people posing as police or members of the court system. They may use a phony number that looks legitimate. The scammer will tell their victim they missed jury duty or did not pay a traffic ticket. The caller then will say they can pay the $300 to $600 on a Green Dot card.

Representatives from both counties say law enforcement agencies and the court system will not contact you by telephone or ask you to pay fines via a pre-paid card.

If you used a credit card in the transaction, you are urged to call your credit card company and report the fraudulent transaction as soon as possible.
