Report ranks Atlanta as a top walkable city

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

A report conducted by LOCUS, a group of real estate professionals who advocate for walkable green spaces in cities, and George Washington University Business School's Center Real Estate and Urban Development Analysis ranked the nation's 30 top walkable cities: Atlanta made the list.

Atlanta's walkability ranked No. 8 out of 30 cities based on current and projected real estate metrics; however, the report suggests Atlanta is poised for a shift toward walkable urbanism.

The report also recommends that Atlanta expand and maintain MARTA.

LOCUS President Chris Leinberger hosted a panel discussion, in which he spent 20 minutes presenting the report. He used a Back to the Future metaphor for the perceived dichotomy between urban and suburban.

"We need a new lens now," Leinberger said during the presentation. "We need a fundamental new way of building metropolitan America: either walkable urban or drivable suburban."

The LOCUS report is essentially an updated 2007 survey by the Brookings Institution's Metropolitan Policy Program.
