Documents from DFCS cases involving alleged abuse released

Posted: Updated:

Punched in the stomach because she wouldn't eat cereal, pinches her cheek and hits her leg with a fist, she gets spankings when she potties in the bed: those are just a few of the allegations of abuse CBS46 found when a team of reporters poured through close to 800 pages of records from Georgia's Department of Family and Children Services.

The records reveal DFCS history with 5-year-old Heaven Woods and her mother.

"In this case I think we obviously had many contacts with this family. There are numerous things that I intend to look deeper into," said Bobby Cagle, DFCS interim director.

Cagle would only give us a phone interview Wednesday. Gov. Nathan Deal recently appointed him as the head of the state's troubled agency.

Cagle said he is investigating if incompetence possibly led to Heaven's death.

"Part of my concern around all these things is that we may not have been as thorough as we needed to be and we may not have had the child's safety as the first and foremost priority when entering that home," said Cagle.

It all came to an end for Heaven on May 20. She died of blunt force trauma to her abdomen. Police charged Heaven's mother Amanda Hendrickson and her boyfriend Roderick Buckner.

According to the DFCS case file, the first allegation came in March 2009, when Heaven was less than a year old. The most recent report of alleged abuse was reported to DFCS on May 1, only 19 days before the child was found dead.
