Washington Co. solid waste department making changes to Cash Hollow center

A local convenience center in Johnson City says it can no longer take building material waste off your hands. The Washington County solid waste department operates five convenience centers, one of those is Cash Hollow in Johnson City. In the past, the center took in a small amount of building material waste from customers even though they are not legally obligated to do so.

Operators say a change was necessary to stay within budget because some have started to abuse that service.

"We have been getting large loads of lumber and construction and building material and demolition material coming in by the pickup truck loads and the trailer loads and it drove our budget over the top," Charles Baines, Director of Solid Waste in Washington County.

If you do have building materials to throw out officials recommend you take it to the Iris Glenn Landfill, but there is a charge to deposit waste materials there.
