ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Police are having trouble finding people who witnessed a deadly shooting overnight at an apartment complex in southwest Atlanta.

The shooting happened at about midnight Tuesday at the complex off Jonesboro Road, just south of Boulder Park Drive. Police said a man in his mid-20s had been hanging out with some friends near a gazebo when someone from outside his group shot him several times.

Mekasha Johnson lives in a nearby building and heard the gunfire.

"That's when I ran to the back (and saw) everybody screaming," said Johnson. "The guy was back there laying on the ground dead."

Resident Angel McWhorter also heard the gunshots.

"They (were) just back there drinking all night, and this happened," McWhorter said. "He got shot like three, four times, and they checked his pulse. He's just dead."

She said she can't figure out what led to the shooting.

"It wasn't an altercation. It wasn't a fight. It was just shooting. That's all," she said. "This happens every night. This is not the first shooting. It's like the fifth shooting this month out here in these apartments."

Detectives believe several of the victim's friends witnessed the shooting but did not stick around to tell police what they saw.

"I think there were witnesses out here that may be reluctant to come forward at this point," said Capt. Paul Guerrucci, homicide commander of the Atlanta Police Department. "We are asking for them to get in contact with us."
