PEACHTREE CITY, GA (CBS46) -

A plane has crashed in Peachtree City.

According to Lt. Mark Brown of the Peachtree City Police, the aircraft went down at 9:18 a.m. Sunday on the north end of the Atlanta Regional Airport, also known as Falcon Field.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the Piper Sport crashed shortly after takeoff from runway 31. The plane crashed at the end of the runway. The FAA will investigate the accident.

Brown says John Ritchey, 64, of Fayetteville, was piloting the plane. Ritchey was taken by helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center in serious condition.

A witness sent us a photo via Facebook. Billy Holder said he was fishing on nearby Lake McIntosh when the plane went down.

"We heard the engine power increase as normal on take-off then silence and then the boom of the crash," said Holder.

CBS46 has a crew at the scene and will bring you updates as soon as we get them.
