(CNN) – T-Mobile was sued Tuesday by the Federal Trade Commission.

The FTC says the carrier cashed in big by hitting customers with hundreds of millions of dollars in bogus charges over the past several years.

The charges were from third-party merchants offering text message subscriptions for things like flirting tips, horoscopes and celebrity gossip.

Those charges frequently were not authorized by customers, and as many as 40 percent of those customers asked for refunds.

T-Mobile CEO John Legere fired back on Tuesday, calling the FTC complaint “sensationalized” and “unfounded and without merit.”
