Mayor Collins wants to exclude tobacco users from city employment

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A policy that Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins is most likely going to move ahead with is creating a lot of buzz. The mayor is looking to enforce a stricter hiring process that directly affects smokers.

Collins plans to implement a policy that make tobacco users ineligible for future employment with the City of Toledo. The policy would lower the city's healthcare costs.

The mayor says he realizes people will be upset at the change, but he feels it's something that has to be done.

"What do I say to those who seek future employment [with the city]? Just think about the health that you are engaging in," Collins said. "Are you realistically willing to say, ‘I don't want to be a cigarette smoker. I don't want to be a tobacco product user'?"

The new policy would not affect current city employees. It could be in place sometime this month.
