Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON COUNTY, VA (WJHL) - Several people are behind bars after authorities in Washington County, the United States Marshals Service, and other law enforcement agencies executed warrants on dozens of fugitives in the area.

Officials call the roundup: Operation Firecracker. The move to clean the streets of southwest Virginia started at 6:00 a.m. Thursday.

"We've got a good county, we want to try to go ahead and do our best to keep our county citizens as safe as they can and get these people out of our communities," Sheriff Fred Newman said. "They are running around here - us knowing that they are wanted and them knowing that they're wanted - sometimes we don't have the manpower to do exactly what we want without the assistance of other agencies"

So far, 32 suspects were arrested – some in other jurisdictions. 15 are said to be detained in other states- while, 17 others were arrested in Washington County, VA Thursday.
