Tyler Perry won the copyrights to "What Would Jesus Do" after a six-year trademark battle, according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Perry's contender, Kimberly "Poprah" Kearney, filed a mark for the rights to the phrase for a potential reality show a few months before Perry. But, due to the reality star's inability to market the phrase, Tyler Perry Studios demanded that the Trademark Office abandon Kearney's registered mark so he could pursue his own mark, unimpeded.
The Trademark Trial and Appeal Board ruled that Kearney had not, in fact, used "What Would Jesus Do" in any commercial respect despite her claim that she began to use the phrase in 2007.
