Citizens fear Douglasville police officers are leaving due to low salaries

Posted: Updated:
DOUGLASVILLE, GA (CBS46) -

Douglasville lost three police officers in the past week. Sources said low salaries are to blame.

"Well obviously … money is an issue. It appears as though the employment landscape is getting a lot better, so they're finding jobs out there that are paying a little bit more," said Frederick Perry, HR director for Douglasville.

Sources said the department has lost several officers to Marta. One officer said Marta increased his salary by $10,000.

This comes at a time when the mayor and city council recently gave themselves raises.

"Well, the mayor and city council did receive modest raises several months ago, but that was certainly inconsequential in terms of our overall budget situation," said Bill Osborne, the city manager.

Officials hope a property tax increase will keep them from having to pull $1 million a year out of city reserves.
