VSP identifies man who died in Washington Co., VA standoff

Washington County, Va. Sheriff's Office issued a correction about Tuesday's standoff on Rocky Hill Road.

According to the release, the wife of standoff suspect, Dennis D. Morrell, 55, left or was released from the residence unharmed.

The son was located by authorities at another residence nearby.

Virginia State Police just released more information about the standoff.

VSP spokesperson Corinne Geller identified the man who died as Dennis D. Morrell, 55.

Geller said VSP officers went to the 1500 block of Rocky Hill Road to assist the Washington County, Virginia Sheriff's Office.

"At approximately 5:45 p.m., the male subject exited his residence and threatened law enforcement with a firearm," Geller said.  "He was subsequently shot."

Morrell died at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

No deputies or troopers were injured in the incident. 


Washington County, Va. Sheriff Fred Newman tells News Channel 11 that the suspect involved in the standoff on Rocky Hill Road died during surgery.

Authorities have not released the name or age of the suspect. 

Virginia State Police have taken the lead on the investigation. 


A standoff at a home on Rocky Hill Road in Bristol, Va. that authorities surrounded following an alleged hostage situation Tuesday afternoon, is now reportedly over.

A News Channel 11 reporter at the scene said during the standoff several gunshots were fired and two ambulances were seen leaving the home.

Washington County, Va. Sheriff’s Office deputies, assisted by the Virginia State Police, are currently surrounding a home on Rocky Hill Road in Bristol, Va. where a hostage situation was reported around 2 p.m.

According to Washington County, Va. Sheriff Fred Newman, deputies responded to the residence on a welfare check and the incident turned into a hostage situation involving a male suspect, a woman and her son.

The woman and her son have since been released from the home and only the suspect remains inside.

News Channel 11 has a reporter at the scene, who said officers from both agencies have surrounded the home, are heavily armed and have the guns pointed at the home.

An incident command center has also been set up and around 11 cop cars are parked along the road, some of which have been used to create a barricade to block thru traffic.

A PA system is also reportedly being used by authorities to communicate with the suspect.

No other information is being released at this time.
