Gee makes impressive return, Mets beat Braves
NEW YORK (AP) - NEW YORK (AP) - David Wright ignited a tiebreaking rally in the seventh inning with a hustle double, Travis d'Arnaud gave Dillon Gee some cushion with a two-run drive later in the seventh and the New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1 on Wednesday night for their first four-game winning streak in a year.
Gee (4-1) returned from two months on the disabled and pitched seven-plus dominant innings as the Mets won the first three of a four-game series against the Braves after being swept in Atlanta less than two weeks ago.
The Braves have lost four straight after a nine-game winning streak.
D'Arnaud's long ball in the seventh came two pitches after Kirk Nieuwenhuis gave New York the lead with a sacrifice fly. The drive to left field off Ervin Santana (7-6) gave New York a homer in nine straight games at Citi Field, a team record for the stadium that opened in 2009.
Liberty acquire Cash from Dream for Milton-Jones
SAN ANTONIO (AP) - The New York Liberty have acquired Swin Cash from the Atlanta Dream in exchange for DeLisha Milton-Jones.
Cash, who has averaged 11.9 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 399 career games, played under Liberty coach and general manager Bill Laimbeer for six seasons in Detroit while helping the Shock win WNBA championships in 2003 and '06.
Traded to Seattle before the 2008 season, Cash helped Seattle win the title in 2010 and spent two years with Chicago. She was averaging career lows of 1.5 points, 0.9 rebounds, 0.7 assists and 8.8 minutes in 17 games in her first season in Atlanta.
Milton-Jones has averaged 11.5 points and 5.3 rebounds in 480 career games, including career lows of 5.9 points and 2.5 rebounds in 19 games this season.
The Liberty announced the trade after their 80-66 loss at San Antonio on Wednesday night.
4 players eligible for NFL's supplemental draft
NEW YORK (AP) - Four players will be available during the NFL's supplemental draft Thursday.
League spokesman Michael Signora said in an email that New Mexico receiver Chase Clayton, North Carolina linebacker Darius Lipford, Virginia-Lynchburg defensive tackle Lakendrick Ross and SMU running back Traylon Shead were eligible for the draft.
The supplemental draft allows qualified underclassmen who did not request early entry into the regular draft to have a chance at entering the NFL. Teams submit picks and are awarded players if their bid - for which round they would take that player - is highest. Teams then lose the corresponding pick in next year's draft.
Players that are not picked become free agents.
Almirola: No apologies for rain-shortened victory
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Aric Almirola says he's making no apologies for gaining his first career Sprint Cup Series victory in a rain-shortened race.
Almirola put the famed No. 43 car of Richard Petty Motorsports in Victory Lane last Sunday in the delayed, and then rain-shortened race at Daytona International Speedway. It was the first victory in 544 races for the car Petty made famous. John Andretti won at Martinsville in 1999.
Almirola has spent two days doing a tire test at Richmond International Raceway.
He says he would feel bad if he'd been running in the back of the pack and stole the win. But he says he was already in front of the field when the rain came and could have won with or without the last thunderstorm.
