Financial support for Harris family wanes, donors get refunds

COBB COUNTY (CBS46) -

People who donated to the family of Cooper Harris after the 22-month-old boy died in the back of a hot car will get their money back, if they paid through PayPal. A company spokeswoman confirmed Friday that the refund was already underway.

"I think that's the right thing to do," said Buckhead-based fundraising consultant David King. "Donors gave thinking they were addressing one problem, but now that appears like it might not be the case. And I think the right thing to do is to give those donors the opportunity to have their money back."

Friends and family helped raise $22,000 for the Harris family in the immediate days after their son was found dead by his father, Justin Ross Harris. The money was raised through the website YouCaring.com. However, as details of the case emerged, including Harris' possible involvement in his son's death, support has quieted down.

"I'm not familiar with any memorial-type fundraising efforts that's ever been turned on its head this way," said King.

"You're in a situation where you're helping a devastated family, and now you're in a situation where you may feel like you're giving money to people who conspired in this tragedy. It really is unprecedented."
