Lagrange Street Polish Festival celebrates heritage, food, culture

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Lagrange Street Polish Festival in north Toledo is underway.

The festival is expected to draw 25-30,000 people are expected to attend.

Among the delicious choices for food is kielbasa from Stanley's Market. Stanley's has been there for all 31 years of the festival. They'll sell three thousand kielbasa sandwiches.

"We make sausage that we would want to eat," said Simon Zychowicz from Stanley's. "Good, quality product, putting in the seasonings we love, and we take pride in what we do."

And you've got to wash down that kielbasa with Polish beer. The most popular brew this weekend is Strawski Beer.

"It's the ale part of it. I love the ale," said Tom Baum. "It's a little bit heavier. If a person likes a heavier beer, that's the way to go."

And don't forget the pierogies! A pierogi-eating contest will be held Sunday.

But the festival is also about celebrating Polish heritage. Casimir Jadwisiak is from Port Clinton. The proud World War II veteran is at the festival promoting a book he wrote about his family called "An Immigrant Family History." He says it represents Polish pride.

"I don't know of anybody that stuck together like we did," Jadwisiak said. "Eight brothers, one girl, stuck together during the depression. Tough years on the farm."   But organizers say you don't have to be Polish to enjoy the festival.

It runs through Sunday. Tickets are $4 on Saturday, and half-price on Sunday. Children eight and under get in free, but all minors must be accompanied by an adult. Senior citizens get in free on Sunday.
