Local hair salon pampers domestic abuse survivors

Posted: Updated:

Inside Elements of Art Hair Gallery in Decatur it looks like any normal day in a salon.  Women, like Shatoya Lowe, smiling, getting their hair and makeup done.

"I'm feeling wonderful, blessed, happy," Lowe said.

But these aren't normal customers.  The women are abuse survivors from the Women's Resource Center to End Domestic Violence.  Salon owner, Tasha Shirley, says she's doing it to enhance the beauty that is already with in them.

"We are providing services for women who have been involved some way, or some how, with domestic violence," Shirley said. "So we reached out to a local shelter in our community and offered the services free of charge today."

Shirley says the work being done on the outside of these women has a direct impact on how they feel on the inside.

"A lot of times as women if we don't look good on the outside, we don't feel good on the inside," Shirley said. "And when you have low self-esteem you sometimes put yourselves in environments that aren't the best for you."

According to Amber Harris, the Director of Development for the Women's Resource Center to End Domestic Violence, the mini-makeover session is also helping some of the women take that first step to financial independence.

"It's really important because most of the women at our safe house are looking for work and so they look polished and put together and presentable and nice when they go in to look for jobs," Harris said.

Shirley is planning more events in the future.  She does this because of what she has witnessed first-hand.

"I saw it in the home growing up as a child," Shirley said. "And I know how it can effect and the effects it can have on women as well as children."

She's doing her part to change the lives of these women and one survivor says it's working.

"When you look good you feel good," Lowe said. "It gives you that confidence and security that happens.  That smile.  If you didn't have it yesterday I got it today."
