A Gwinnett County mother is behind bars after police say she allegedly left her four children in a hot car while she went shopping.

According to police, John Dunkley saw a car full of kids inside a car in the parking lot of the Walmart on Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Norcross. He did not see a parent or guardian nearby, so he called police.

When police arrived, Dunkley and a crowd of people were surrounding the car. Inside were the four young children, including a 1-month-old infant. The car was not running and one window in the back was down. All the doors were unlocked and the bystanders opened one of the doors to let more air through.

The newborn was crying and sweating.

The responding officer tried to ask the children where their mother was and how long they had been in the car, but they were not able to tell him.

The officer ran the car's license plate and found a phone number. The children's grandfather answered the call and provided the officer with the mother's phone number.

Just as the officer tried to call the mother Arlete Makoudjo, she walked out of the Walmart.

According to the report, Makoudjo did not seem to care that there were police and a large crowd around her car.

She tried to get into her car, but officers asked her why she left her children inside. Makoudjo said she was inside shopping for a bicycle pump and asked what the big deal was.

Police called the children's grandfather to have him come pick them up.

Makoudjo was arrested and charged with one count of reckless conduct for each child in the car.
