Federal bureau advises consumers file complaints if wronged by 'lawsuit mill'

Posted: Updated:

The Consumer Finance Protection Bureau recommends Georgians who believe they were wronged by troubled law firm, Frederick J. Hanna & Associates, file a complaint with the federal agency.

Consumers can call the Bureau at 855-411-2372 or fill out an online complaint form at www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint.

The CFPB sued the Hanna firm and three managing partners this week for violating federal debt collecting laws by intimidating consumers into paying debt many did not actually owe.

CBS46 News investigative reporter Jeff Chirico has been investigating Hanna and his firm's questionable debt collection practices since February. The State Bar of Georgia is also investigating Hanna for possible violations of its professional rules of conduct.

In a statement, CFPB spokesperson Moira Vahey told CBS46 that the Bureau is "still collecting evidence and will continue to do so as the case proceeds through the court system. Whether any funds will be paid to consumers has yet to be determined because the Bureau has just filed its lawsuit."
