Puppies seized in Cherokee County get vet care

Posted: Updated:

More than 350 puppies seized from a Cherokee County location that authorities said was a puppy mill were given veterinarian care on Wednesday.

Cherokee County marshals raided the property off Cumming Highway on Tuesday and found dogs packed into cages. Many of the cages had feces in or around them.

The staff at the Cherokee County Animal Shelter began examining the dogs Wednesday morning.

"They're a little bit fearful when you first approach them in the cage, but with a little encouragement they're coming up to us," said Dr. Solveig Evans, a veterinarian, as she cared for a Pomeranian. "As you can see, she just wants to be held. She just wants to be cuddled."

Solveig said most of the dogs had bad teeth, long toe nails and other minor health problems.

"A lot of just poor nutrition, not getting adequate things to chew on and then uncleanliness," said Evans. "A lot of times they'll eat their own poop for lack of nutrition."

CBS46 News went to the home of the property owners on Wednesday. An unidentified man said his family has bred dogs for years and the puppies were well cared for.

"We've been raising dogs 40 years, that's all I can tell you," said the man. "We got so many people that called us and they're going to come to court, don't worry. We don't have enemies and we don't sell sick dogs."

The attorney for Joy Wise, the owner listed in court documents, did not return calls. The dogs will not be adopted out until the case is settled in court.

"We just wait," said Susan Garcia, director of the Cherokee County Animal Shelter. "We take care of the animals, nurse them back to health, get them healthy and love on them. Then we wait to see what happens on the legal side."

Evans said it could take several days to examine all the animals.

"I get the chills," said Evans. "I get the chills that they've been through so much, and they've been treated so poorly. I just want to take them all home."
