STOCKTON, CA (KTXL/CNN) - Police say a wild bank robbery chase ended in a gunfight Wednesday and three people dead.
According to police, three suspects took three female hostages from a bank and stole an employee's SUV.
Police got the bank robbery report and arrived as the suspects were dragging out the hostages. Officers chased the SUV.
During the chase, one hostage was thrown from the vehicle. She had been shot and was taken to a hospital.
The chase continued as one suspect fired a semiautomatic rifle from the car.
The chase ended shortly after a second hostage, who had a non-life threatening gunshot wound, was thrown from the car.
"Right at the end, we know that the suspects opened fire at police officers," Stockton Police spokesman Joseph Silva said. "And there was a long gun battle going back and forth. And when our SWAT officers were able to go up to the vehicle, they saw three suspects had been shot. Two have been transported to the hospital, and one was deceased inside the vehicle along with another person who we're still trying to confirm if that was a hostage."
It was later confirmed that a hostage was among the dead.
Police also said that during the chase one suspect hit police cars, civilian vehicles and houses with gunfire.
