Jeff Mann has been elected DeKalb County Sheriff, defeating opponent Vernon Jones.

Mann received 40,537 votes, while Jones picked up 12,553 votes.

Mann and Jones spent the day before elections canvassing the community.

CBS46 first caught up with Mann outside the old courthouse square on Monday. Several elected officials held a news conference to show their support prior to election day.

"I'm honored to have the support of Democrats and Republicans, men and women who the citizens of DeKalb County have elected to represent them," Mann said.

In another part of town, Jones was in a coffee shop shaking hands and passing out flyers.

"We are going to use the sheriff's office to augment and support the police department," Jones said.  He added, "We are going to declare a war on crime."

Both candidates were asked why they think they deserve to be sheriff.

"Well, I've been doing the job for the last 14 years," Mann said. "I am a law enforcement official. I know what it takes to run the jail.  I know what the individuals in the sheriff's office need, want, and desire in a leader," said Mann.

However, Jones made it clear a law enforcement background isn't a requirement to hold the office.

"There was a sheriff before him that was a county commissioner," Jones said.  "There was another sheriff that happened to be a former baseball player. The sheriff job is that of an administrator. I have supreme experience and background in working and managing a large organization," Jones said.
