TAZEWELL COUNTY, VA (WJHL)  - Wednesday's sentencing in Tazewell County marked the conclusion of a five year investigation into a double murder.

Harvey and Valerie Looney were found dead at the Pizza Plus restaurant in Claypool Hill, Virginia back in 2009.

The man convicted of killing them, their son, Christopher Looney.

On Wendesday, cameras were not allowed inside this Tazewell County courtroom for a hearing, but an audio recording left the audience silent. It was the first time they heard in Christopher Looney's own words, how he says he murdered his parents back in 2009.

The audio recording was from Looney's confession in 2013. In court the audio detailed Looney discussing the knife he used to commit the crime, even admitting he used a mop to cover his tracks the night of the murder.

In a news conference Wednesday, Commonwealth Attorney Dennis Lee discussed a motive, saying Christopher Looney came to the Pizza Plus that night looking for money.

"The crime scene was very brutal and I am certain that anger played a major role in the deaths," said Lee.

Christopher will now spend his life behind bars without the possibility of parole.

"The conviction of the defendant brings hopefully some closure, I know not to the family, but to the community," said Lee.

Family members of the Looney's asked prosecutors to take the death penalty off the table, saying they had already suffered enough losing two family members, and did not want to lose another.

The son of a couple who was murdered more than 5 years ago, learned his fate in a Tazewell County courtroom.  Christopher Looney, 33, did not contest the charges of capital murder and robbery and was sentenced to life in prison without parole Wednesday afternoon.

The bodies of 48-year-old Valerie and 52-year-old Harvey Looney were found in March 2009 inside Pizza Plus, a parlor they managed in Cedar Bluff, VA.

The couple’s son and only child,Christopher Dean Looney of Belfast, was indicted by a grand jury last November. He was arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder in their deaths on February 14, 2013 – nearly 4 years after their deaths.

A co-worker discovered their bodies more than 5 years ago on March 30, 2009. The Looneys closed up shop the night before. Harvey punched out at 10:58 and waited—as he did every night—to drive his wife home. Sometime later he left Valerie inside to dump ice from the salad bar in an alley behind the restaurant.

County Sheriff's Office Capt. Anne Hickman said someone hit Harvey, knocked him to the ground, and killed him. The incident report indicates his attacker used a knife or cutting instrument.

Valerie was near her desk when someone hit and killed her too, she said. "She had defensive wounds, so she did try to ward off the attacker," Hickman said.

A press conference was held following Wednesday's hearing. We'll have more details on this case beginning on News Channel 11 at 5:30.
