Blind man falls onto MARTA train tracks

Posted: Updated:

A man is recovering after falling onto the train tracks at a MARTA station in downtown Atlanta Tuesday evening.

MARTA spokeswoman, Alisa Jackson, said the man is in his late 30's and he is blind. Jackson said the man had his walking stick with him as he stood on the platform waiting for the northbound train at the Civic Center station.  But, it seems the rumble of the approaching southbound train disoriented the man somehow, causing him to fall off the platform.

"Fortunately when he realized what had happened he rolled back toward the wall so our train operator did not hit him," Jackson said.

Nearby passengers quickly called out for help, prompting MARTA police officers to radio another oncoming train's operator to stop.

"We are very thankful for our other alert customers and were paying attention and were able to help the situation from being a devastating one," said Jackson.

Rescue crews lifted the man off the tracks and rushed him to Grady Hospital. The fall hurt him, but Jackson said he was lucid and doing well.
