Mom accuses daycare of leaving baby on hot playground

A DeKalb County mom plans to file charges after she said her baby was left, unattended, on a hot playground for at least an hour.

"It was just negligence," said La'Teecia Williams, the baby's mom.

According to Williams, staff at Green Pastures Christian School, located on Flat Shoals Parkway in Decatur, forgot the 14-month-old child on Wednesday morning.

"They apparently did not go around and look around the playground to make sure they got all the kids. If they did, they would've seen her still out there," said Williams.

Williams said it was another parent, who arrived at the school, who noticed the baby crying inside the fenced-in playground.

"The parent went in the school and reported it. There was a baby crying and banging on the door," said Williams.

Williams said she took her daughter to the hospital, who other than being slightly dehydrated, appeared to be fine.

Dr. Collette Gunby, president and senior pastor of Green Pastures Christian Ministries, called the incident a "fluke."

Gunby said staff members always do headcounts and immediately noticed the child missing. She said the baby hadn't been outside for more than 10 minutes when the parent arrived and noticed her.

"We are going to keep doing the same protocol we've been given through the state, which is headcounts, and we're going to keep following that to the letter," said Gunby.

She also said that in the more than 30 years the school has existed, they've never had this happen.

Gunby said two teachers have been suspended indefinitely pending the outcome of an internal as well as state investigation.

Williams said she took both of her daughters out of the school Thursday.

"It just makes me scared to even send her back to school, she said.
