TPD: Elderly man murdered inside his midtown home

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

It's still unclear when he was killed, but when police arrived at his home in the 800 block of West Budmore Terrace Friday, 66-year-old David Martinez was dead, perhaps for several days.

Police say he suffered obvious signs of trauma, which was one reason why homicide detectives were immediately called to the scene.

Neighbors say they don't know much about David Martinez, only that they thought he lived alone and kept to himself.

On most days, they saw him leave for work in the morning and return home late in the afternoon.

But for some reason, that suddenly stopped about a week and half ago.

That's why one of his co-workers stopped by his midtown home Friday night just to make sure he was okay.

"When that person got there, they noticed that things looked a little suspicious," Tucson Police Sgt. Pete Dugan says. "Things like the mail not being picked up, his vehicle was still there -- so at that point they said, 'Let's call the police.'"

When police arrived they found that one of the doors to the home was open.

Once they got a little closer, it was immediately apparent they were dealing with foul play.

"The officers at that point made entry to do a welfare check and that's where they did locate an adult male who had obvious signs of trauma indicative of a homicide," Dugan says.

Which brings us to today.

Why would somebody target this 66-year-old man? And does anybody have any idea who could have done this to him?

At this point police aren't saying much about the case, which suggests they may have some viable leads.

But investigators can always use more, whether you witnessed something firsthand or even heard something in passing.

"Even the smallest piece of information we can get sometimes becomes a much large piece," Dugan says.

If you have any information about what happened to David Martinez inside his midtown home, call 911 or 88-CRIME, the Pima County Attorney's anonymous tip line.

A reward up to $1,000 will go to the person whose tip leads to an arrest in this unsolved case.
