STAMFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A man posing as a handicapped person, using a wheelchair, robbed a Stamford jewelry store and got away with a Rolex watch.

The accused thief rolled around the store in his wheelchair and once he gets his hands on a $27,000 Rolex he gets up out of the wheelchair, pepper sprays the clerk and makes a run for it.

Police said they believe the suspect was wearing a wireless phone headset so his accomplices in a getaway car in a parking garage could hear everything going on inside.

Police believe the man is in his late 40's early 50s and had the entire robbery at Sidney Thomas Jewelry planned out.

"I think these two things, being well dressed and being in the wheelchair, took the concern level down quite a bit," said Stamford Police Detective Rich Conklin.

Sidney Thomas Jewelry is located on the fifth floor of the downtown Stamford Mall. Police said the thief took an escalator up to the seventh floor of the mall and made his way out to the parking garage.

While the suspect was able to get away, he left behind the wheelchair and a hat.

"We've retrieved some fingerprints from that wheelchair and hopefully they are his," Conklin added.

Some local shoppers said they think the charges the suspect could face should be even more serious because he was posing as someone with a disability.

Police are still looking for the suspect.
