Analysis of Northeast Tennessee's election results

TRI-CITIES, TN (WJHL) -

In Carter County, Dexter Lunceford defeated incumbent Sheriff Chris Mathes in the race for top-cop in Carter County, with Lunceford securing 6,994 votes and 5,416 write-in votes.

Kent Williams retired from the State House to run for Carter County Mayor. He lost to incumbent Leon Humphrey. Humphrey got 6750 votes and Williams got 6054 votes.

In the Republican primary for the Second District House race between incumbent Rep. Tony Shipley and challenger Bud Hulsey, Hulsey defeated Shipley following a heated and emotional campaign.

Hulsey took home more than half the votes over Shipley.

The race for the Third District House seat between Timothy Hill and Kevin Parsons, people voted to keep Hill in office.

Hill's brother, Incumbent State Rep. Matthew Hill also defeated Phil Carriger for the Washington County 7th District seat.

Another closely watched race in Washington County where State Rep. Micah Van Huss hoped to win re-election to a second term.

Van Huss faced a challenge from Johnson City Commissioner Clayton Stout who said Van Huss wasn't providing the leadership the people need, but the people have spoken and they say Van Huss should stay in office. He garnered more than half of the votes.

Incumbent Unicoi County Mayor Greg Lynch was named the winner of the close race between his challenger, Larry Rose. Lynch won the race by three votes.

In other results, John B Holsclaw, Jr., defeated Judy R. Veeneman for the Tennessee House 4th Representative District seat.

Also in, Garland “Bubba” Evely and Cathy Thomas were voted in as school board members in District 1 and Dwight Bennett and Steve Willis were elected in as school board members in District 3.

Former Unicoi County Sheriff Kent Harris defeated Jonesborough Mayor Kelly Wolfe in the GOP Tennessee State Executive Committeeman District 3 race. Harris received 12,797 votes and Wolfe received 12,099 votes. 

Wolfe won Washington and Unicoi Counties, but Harris won big in Carter County giving him the almost 600 vote surplus.


Previous story:
Another hotly contested race is the Republican nomination for United States Senate. In Sullivan County Sen. Lamar Alexander is leading challenger Joe Carr with almost 52 percent of the vote. Carr has around 37 percent of the votes in Sullivan County.

Washington County Tennessee has not yet posted returns.

Polls closed at 8 p.m.
