Trees fall in Grant Park due to strong storms

Posted: Updated:

An Atlanta family suffered major damage to their home Thursday night after trees started falling in their yard.

"(We heard a ) loud noise, a lot of rain, strong winds and the next thing we knew it's (a room in his house) gone and trees are down everywhere," said Jim Higginbotham, the homeowner.

The damage occurred at their home at the 500 block of Glenwood Avenue in the Grant Park part of Atlanta.

The trees fell due to strong winds caused by a thunderstorm.

One tree fell on a truck in the yard, while another tree fell on the back of the house, crushing a room.

The homeowner said the family will remain in the house despite the damage.

The storms produced heavy rain, lightning and non-severe thunderstorm winds strong enough to cause the damage.

More than 17,000 people went without power at a point Thursday night due to the storms.
