Tractor trailer accident fatality closes Route 460 for hours

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) -

All lanes on Route 460 came to a stand still around 4:30 a.m. Saturday because of an accident involving a tractor trailer and an SUV.

The SUV somehow became pinned underneath the tractor trailer.  Police say the driver of the SUV did not survive the crash.

The passenger was trapped underneath the tractor trailer for several hours. Rescue crews freed that person just after 7 a.m. Saturday and she was taken to a nearby hospital.

"I feel for the family right now," Carlessia Weaver-Hall said.

Carlessia Weaver-Hall travels this road every morning. She says the intersection is no stranger to accidents involving big trucks and cars that speed.

"Although there is 45 miles speed on Wagner Road many times it is not honored.  Many times we go a little bit faster than we are supposed to," Weaver-Hall said.

While the cause of this accident remains under investigation, many who were stuck in traffic on Route 460 Saturday morning couldn't help but wonder if speed or distracted driving may have played a part in the crash.

"Coming down the road, I mean I've seen so many people talking on their [cell phones] and you know everything else that is the main problem.  Put the phones down," John Williams said.

Officials have yet to say if the driver of the tractor trailer was harmed.  Carlessia Weaver-Hall says she hopes the passenger pulls through and cautions all drivers to watch out for each other on highway roads.
