ATLANTA (CBS46) -

It was a busy Wednesday in metro Atlanta with numerous showers and thunderstorms throughout the afternoon and evening.

A total of 24 severe thunderstorm warnings were issued in the CBS46 viewing area on Wednesday, including a warning for Atlanta during the afternoon.

What is a severe thunderstorm warning?

A severe thunderstorm warning means that strong wind gusts of at least 58 mph, or large hail is expected.

While the storms did produce small hail, strong winds were the main problem.

The winds helped to knock down several trees and powerlines in metro Atlanta.

Why the storms?

The storms developed mainly because of an upper-level disturbance that moved in from Tennessee. This disturbance, along with a lot of heat and humidity, helped to produce the strong storms on Wednesday.
