Woman caught in crossfire of police shootout in South Fulton Co.

FULTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

An 18-year-old woman is recovering from a gunshot wound to the leg after being caught in the crossfire of a shootout between a suspected cell phone thief and police officers.

According to investigators, College Park police officers responded to a cell phone store in the area of Old National Highway and Jolly Road at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday. When officers arrived, the suspect took off running, police said.

The College Park officers chased the man toward Heritage Elementary School where he turned toward the officers and fired shots at them, police said. The officers fired back.

An 18-year-old woman was caught in the crossfire. Paramedics took her to Grady Memorial Hospital where she was being treated for a gunshot wound to the leg. She is expected to survive, police said.

The suspect got away. Anyone with information in the case is asked to call the Fulton County Police Department.
