MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -

A Mount Olive mother was killed in a fire Monday morning in Wayne County after her son was able to escape.

The Wayne County 911 Center received several calls around 6:57 a.m. Monday about a fire at 133 Bass Lake Drive.

Before firefighters arrived, a neighbor tried to enter the residence but was unsuccessful due to the intensity of the fire.

When firefighters finally arrived, they attempted to enter the residence but were also prevented from entering due to the conditions.

Once firefighters were able to enter, they found Sharon Kascask deceased in the master bedroom.

Kascask's 12-year-old son woke up during the fire and was able to escape through his bedroom window. The boy ran to his neighbor's house for help.

The 12-year-old suffered smoke inhalation and minor burns to his body and was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Fire investigators were unable to determine an exact source of ignition, therefore the cause of the fire has been ruled undetermined at this time.
