Dead dogs dumped in Atlanta's Capitol View community

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Fulton County Animal Control is investigating a dead dog found dumped in Southwest Atlanta on Monday.

Neighbors said this is the third time this has happened in the past couple of months.

The dogs were found on Gennessee Avenue between Desoto and Allene Avenues in the city's Capitol View community.

"I was trying to film with one hand and cut the bag open with the other one," said Benjamin Hodges.

Hodges recorded cell phone video of a Pit bull dog he found in a trash bag dumped in his neighborhood Monday.

"When the animal control guy came and looked at the dog he said he had been disemboweled," said Hodges.

Hodges and his neighbors believe the dead dog was used for fighting. Darryl Roy said it's not the first time someone dumped dead Pit bull dogs in their community.

"It's very sad. These dogs to these individuals are not pets. They are things used for their entertainment and it's sad," said Roy. "They appear to be healthy dogs."

Roy has lived in the community for ten years. He was walking a friend dog when he spotted the first to dead dog in June.

"I noticed a large black bag. I could tell it was a Pit bull, a large Pit bull," said Roy. "About three weeks to a month later, another dog in plastic in the middle of the neighborhood this time."

Roy said for five days he called Atlanta police and the city's sanitation department but not one seemed to care.

"Friday I finally said, 'Look, if you don't send someone out, I'm calling the news.' They took it that day," said Roy.

Fulton County Animal Control picked up the dog Monday. They don't know if it was used for fighting.

The director said it's being investigated, but the dog's body may be too decomposed for investigators to get evidence.

She advises people who live in the county to call if you suspect dog fighting or if you see someone dumping what may appear to be a dog. The number to call is 404-613-9123 or 404-613-4954.
