South Forsyth High School graduate killed in bar fight

Students at South Forsyth High School are trying to come to grips with the death of 2014 graduate Michael Gatto.

Principal Jeff Cheney told CBS46 reporter Vince Sims it was an emotional morning at the school.

"It's never an easy situation for us as a school to deal with," Cheney said. "It was a pretty somber start to our school day."

Pictures posted on Twitter showed about 300 students gathered on the football field. They joined hands to pray for Gatto and his family.

"It was really great to see the students come together, support each other and try to figure out the best way they can deal with this sad situation," Cheney said.

Gatto was a freshman at Georgia Southern University.

According to Statesboro police, 20-year-old Grant Spencer was arrested and charged with aggravated battery in the case. Officers were called to Rude Rudy's bar just after midnight Thursday morning. Officers found Gatto unconscious with head injuries. He later died at Memorial Hospital in Savannah, GA.

Spencer worked at the bar, but was off duty at the time of the altercation.

Spencer is in custody and being held at the Bulloch County Jail. The charges have not been upgraded.

Gatto ran track and was very well known among his classmates. He served on the school's spirit team.

"He was one of our biggest cheerleaders on the sidelines, leading a lot of our student events and stuff," said Cheney.

Cheney added, "A great student and great kid that embodied everything about being a war eagle. So he will be surely missed."
