Building experts give advice on home deck safety

Posted: Updated:

Licensed residential builder Gus Pounds showed CBS46 Vince Sims around a new home he is building in Brookhaven. Pounds said there are obvious signs homeowners should look for when it comes to inspecting their decks.

"If you see any deflection in a deck or any instability or movement I would suggest having a civil engineer or home inspector come out and review the deck," Pounds said.

According to Pounds the 2012 building codes have been adapted and upgrades for 2014. He says if you have someone come out to inspect your deck you should ask them if they follow the new guidelines.

"They put in the new code how to attach it through the brick and get to timbers and materials that secure this deck and keep it from releasing from the home or dropping," Pounds said.

If you deck is deemed unstable pounds says homeowners have two options.

"I would first look at securing it and then the last option would be replacement," Pounds said.
