Metro Atlanta military families get much needed help with groceries

Posted: Updated:

According to Feeding America, 25 percent of military families rely on food pantries or other charitable organizations to put food on the table.

The need in metro Atlanta was clear Friday at the Home Depot on Roswell Road. Nearly 200 active military, National Guard and veterans' families received $250 worth of groceries.

Three wives we spoke to drove four hours from Ft. Stewart for the help and a new-to-the-area military family told us the resources are helpful.

"It's worth the effort, you know. It helps out," Misty Theis of Ft. Stewart said. "Sometimes money is tight. It depends on what's going on."

Samantha Shine of Cobb County said, "It helps a lot with one income, with [only] one parent being able to work right now. Child care is expensive."

In addition to groceries, boxes of personal care items, wrapping paper and DVDs were also handed out. The event is a partnership between United Military Care, Yamaha Motor Corporation, Feed the Children and Home Depot.

Military families in need are encouraged to reach out to United Military Care.
