Wireless wars

Kmart and Sears say they are getting an early jump on Thanksgiving shopping. Kmart says it will open at 6am Thanksgiving and stay open for 42 hours straight.

Sears says it will open at 6pm this year, two hours earlier than last year. Retailers predict holiday shopping will be four percent high this year, compared to last.

On time and under the tree

You probably remember what happened last year with a lot of holiday packages: they did not make it to doorsteps in time for Christmas. This year, retailers and shippers are buckling down to avoid that same disaster.

Fedex now has 15 meteorologists in their Global Operations Control Center who help determine weather related delays. Their plan is to hire on 50,000 seasonal workers; Amazon will hire 80,000. And the United States Postal Service has added facilities that expand existing shipping centers.

In the books

With Thanksgiving just a few weeks away, you might be trying to book a flight to see family. But, when you should book for the best deal is up for debate.

The search engines all disagree. Time Magazine quotes Kayak as saying two to four weeks before Thanksgiving...Orbitz says tomorrow, Thursday, or Saturday. And Skyscanner says two weeks out from Thanksgiving.

Here is what everyone says to avoid: do not fly the Wednesday before Thanksgiving or the Sunday after, since those will be the most expensive flights.

And you may actually want to consider flying on Thanksgiving, where you could get 30 percent off the ticket.
