Police: Fake Best Buy employees scamming iPhone buyers on Craigslist

Posted: Updated:

Police in Gwinnett County say three men who reportedly took advantage of buyers looking to snag a deal on the iPhone 5 have been arrested.

Gwinnett County Police spokesperson Cpl. Jake Smith said the scam first started last November. That's when a victim went to Best Buy on Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth to buy 30 Apple iPhone 5 smartphones. The victim planned to buy the phones in bulk at a discounted rate from a seller on Craigslist.

The seller told the victim he worked at that Best Buy and he used an employee discount to get the low price.

When the victim arrived, he talked to a man wearing a Best Buy shirt who said he was a co-worker of the Craigslist seller. That man gave the buyer a computer printout of an invoice for the phone with the Best Buy logo. He then asked the victim for $8,500 in cash.

When the victim went to hand over the cash, the suspect snatched it and ran out of the parking lot.

"The investigation revealed that the suspect was not an employee, the invoice provided to the victim was a fake, and no Apple iPhones existed to which the victim was entitled," said Smith in a release.

Since then, Gwinnett County police have reported another eight similar incidents. All of them took place at the same Best Buy in Duluth. Victims have been scammed out of about $25,000 overall.

Detectives say ads for the same scam have been posted in Nashville, TN and Greenville, SC in hopes victims would travel to Gwinnett County. Police in Atlanta and Dunwoody have also reported similar crimes.

Smith says GCPD has identified three possible suspects in the crimes. They have arrested and charged Cameron Thompson, 24, Princeton Claytin, 31, and Carey Carter, 21. Clayton was also arrested last month for a similar scheme in Atlanta and Thompson was arrested in September in Dunwoody.

Carter was charged with two counts of theft by deception. He is currently in custody at the Gwinnett County Detention Center without bond. Clayton and Thompson are out on bond.
