Mother denied bond after being charged in fire that killed children

DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Two children were killed and another child was taken to the hospital after a fire in DeKalb County.

The children's mother, Rockell Coleman, faces charges of murder and cruelty to children after her five children were found alone in a home that caught fire Friday night.

Five counts of child abandonment were dropped, according to the DeKalb County District Attorney.

Coleman was denied bond and her next court date isn't until early next year.

CBS46 talked with Coleman's mother, who has concerns about how police are handling the investigation.

According to the children's grandmother, Lydia Pinckney, they were supposed to be in the care of her son's ex-girlfriend when the fire happened Friday night. The two were friends, but now the family can't find her.

"She came to stay with my daughter about three weeks ago," said Pinckney. "From that night until now, it's like she disappeared from the face of the earth. She's not responding to telephone calls, voice messages, text messages, nothing at all."

She may not be responding to the family, but she has been posting to Facebook since the fire.

And when Coleman tried to tell police about the roommate, Pinckney said they didn't believe her.

"She got paperwork that's over to that house still, with her name and stuff on it, but then you're gonna tell my daughter that the person don't even exist?" said Pinckney.

Perhaps the only people who know what really happened to cause this inferno are the children who survived, a 9-year-old and a 4-year-old.

Police have already talked to them, but haven't allowed family access to the boys.

"I haven't spoken to them, and that's part of the thing. No one from DFACS (Department of Children and Family Services) has talked to me, no one has called me. The detective hasn't called me," said Pinckney.

Coleman's family is being kept in the dark, and left to figure out how to pay for funerals for the two youngest boys.

"She didn't have insurance for the kids, so we're setting up a fund to try and get some assistance and help them with their home-going services," said Pinckney.

CBS46 tried to call the friend of Coleman's the grandmother talked about. None of our calls were returned.

We also tried to talk to the DeKalb County police Department with no success.
