Suspect accidentally shoots himself while running from police

Posted: Updated:

A man accidentally shot himself at the end of a police pursuit in South Fulton County Wednesday morning.

Police tell CBS46 the incident started when officers tried to stop a vehicle that had been reported stolen Monday.

The legitimate owner of the vehicle spotted his stolen truck at Hickory Park Apartments in College Park on Tuesday, and he called 911 to tell them where it was.

He said he left his truck running at a gas station in Union City as he stepped in to get some coffee.  That's when someone jumped inside and drove it away

After the owner called 911, he followed the white pickup truck to an address on Bearing Way, and that's where police caught up.  Officers heard shots fired shortly after they arrived.

Witnesses believed the shots were fired at police, but investigators later decided that it was actually one of the suspects shooting himself in the leg.

The house was surrounded and police had weapons ready until they determined that no one else was inside.

A short time later, a woman who lives nearby found the suspect with a gunshot wound lying in her yard on Vernier Drive.

She told him that he needed to straighten his life out as she tried to stop his bleeding.

That man was arrested, but the rest of the suspects got away.

Officers were still looking for them in the neighborhood Wednesday afternoon.
