Milton man hacked to death in Bangladesh machete attack

MILTON, GA (CBS46) - Assailants armed with a machete brutally attacked and killed a Milton man and severely injured his wife in Bangladesh Thursday night.

Avijit Roy, 42, and his wife were leaving a book fair in Dhaka when the attack occurred.

An atheist, Roy was a frequent critic of radical Islamic doctrine and reports said he had received death threats in the past.

"I didn't know they were involved in any political activities or any of that," said Krish Lakshminarayanan, the couple's next door neighbor. "They were really quiet. They went about their business, and they're really nice people.”

Roy had his own website which was shut down on Friday. A message posted said: "We mourn, but we are not out."

In addition to his own blog, Roy wrote for Center for Inquiry, an organization that critiques religion. "Dr. Roy was a true ally, a courageous and eloquent defender of reasons, science, and free expression in a country where those values have been under heavy attack," wrote Michael De Dora, CFI's Chief UN representative.

No arrests have been made and no suspects named though Bangladeshi authorities believe a little-known radical Islamic group is behind the brual attack.

"That's why America is such a great country," said Lakshminarayanan. "We have freedom of speech and we're lucky to be here. Honestly, it's such a sad thing."
