LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
A Las Vegas mother is heartbroken following the suicide of her teenage daughter. She said her daughter was bullied at school and on social media.
Natika Bird said she doesn't know what her life will be like without her daughter, Carla Jamerson. She said her daughter was reserved at times but was generally happy.
“All of our lives are going to be missing one key factor, and that's Carla. [She was] very laid back, but not afraid to be goofy, and that's what I loved about her,” Bird said.
Bird said Carla was often picked on by her eighth-grade classmates at Canarelli Middle School.
“She had been getting bullied for a long time, to the point where the happy, bubbly girl that I knew changed,” she said. “They hacked into her email and they created a Facebook page and they massacred her.”
Bird said she had discussed the situation with Clark County School District police.
“The school police told me because it was not on school campus and after hours, I needed to call the regular police. The regular police told me, ‘You need to call the school police,'” Bird said.
Bird said her daughter couldn't handle it anymore and on Friday she hanged herself. Bird said parents in similar situations need to contact every school administrator available.
“You go as hard as you can, and at the same time let your kid know that this is not their fault,” she said. “Other kids are going to see their kids get married. They're going to see their kids graduate from high school. They're going to see their kids have grandkids. That was ripped apart from me.”
District officials said they cannot comment on the personal or disciplinary files of students.
A memorial page for Carla has been set up on Facebook, here. In addition, a GoFundMe account has been set up to help Carla's family with funeral expenses. Those wishing to donate may do so here.
