Violent crime spikes in Little Five Points

ATLANTA (CBS46) - Atlanta police acknowledge a spike in crime in Zone Six, which includes Little Five Points, where two men were recently murdered.

Statistics from the department indicate the number of murders is up 400 percent, rapes up 200 percent and robberies up 40 percent this year compared to the same time last year.

"I figured it would be safe during the day, but I especially wouldn't come here by myself at night," said Meredith Lorch, who was showing a visiting friend the area.

On March 14, two men were shot and killed as they walked near the Vortex Bar & Grill around 2:45 a.m. after a night out. Police have not said if the motive was robbery. A memorial stands in their honor near the site of the murders.

Around the same time that morning, two people were robbed at gunpoint nearby.

“When you have people in their teens or 20's that are going to kill somebody over $20 and a cell phone, it's a phenomenon I don't understand and that really rattles me," David Simpson, who has owned Coyote Trading Company for 22 years.

Atlanta police said while they have seen a spike in some crimes in Zone Six in the first few months of this year, they report crime is down 34 percent since 2009. They also report they have made numerous arrests recently.

"We anticipate that the Atlanta Police Department will reverse the current trend in Zone Six as we continue to work hard and move resources to the area to combat crime," said Deputy Chief Joseph Spillane.

Simpson said the business association in Little Five Points will hold a meeting on Wednesday. They have asked police to attend and outline what the department is doing to stop the rash of violent crimes.

"It's a big concern for the entire community, for everybody," said Jason Lettice, a business owner who said he knew the men recently murdered. "Those two people were good souls."
