Car stolen from customer moments after it was valet parked

ATLANTA (CBS46) - Why hot wire a car when one victim says you can steal the keys from the valet box.

Elston Kirk said he was going to eat dinner Friday night around 7:30 p.m. with some friends when he parked his car with Sunshine Parking.

After pulling into the parking lot at Juniper and 5th Street in Midtown Atlanta, he walked into the restaurant for dinner.

“The valet walked in behind me and said they stole my key, took the car, sideswiped a couple cars, almost hit a pedestrian and fled through the parking lot. [They also] picked up three other guys,” Kirk said.

Kirk said he never got a straight answer from the valet about how the thief was able to get into the valet box and steal the key to his red 2013 KIA Optima.

“I figured when you park at valet there is nothing to worry about,” Kirk said. “It totally ruined my night, and my whole weekend.”

Since the criminal took his keys, Kirk decided to have the keys to his home remade and changed the locks.

Given what happened Kirk said he hesitates returning to Atlanta for dinner.

“I think I might just want to stay in Smyrna now,” Kirk said. “I think it is ridiculous the crimes they are committing against innocent people.”

Atlanta police continue to investigate this case.

Officials with Sunshine Parking said they are working closely with investigators and gave Kirk a rental car for him to use, until he can have his vehicle repaired.
